Hokies look to stop streak
Tech to play Maryland, UMBC and Davidson

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team will look to get back on the winning track this weekend at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. The Hokies play host to No. 57 Maryland on Sat., Feb. 19 at 1 p.m., and then play a double-header on Sun., Feb. 20 against Maryland-Baltimore County (9 a.m.) and Davidson (5 p.m.).

Virginia Tech (2-4, 0-1) dropped two tough road matches last weekend at No. 64 Dartmouth (4-3) and at Boston College (3-4). Tech has lost four straight matches, and the last three by 4-3 margins.

Maryland (5-1, 0-1) won at No. 41 Harvard by a 6-1 count last week. The Terps only loss of year occurred at Boston College (4-3). Maryland leads the series, 7-6, but Tech recorded a 5-2 win last year in College Park, Md.

UMBC (4-3) dropped two matches last week falling at Old Dominion (5-2) and at then-No. 30 Virginia Commonwealth (7-0). The Retreivers and Hokies have only met once with Tech taking a 6-1 win at home on Feb. 26, 2006. UMBC will face both Radford and Davidson on Saturday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center prior to Sunday’s contest.

Davidson (3-6) lost two road matches last week at Brown (6-1) and at Boston University (7-0). The Wildcats have dropped five straight contest and Tech leads the all-time series, 16-0. The Hokies won last year, 4-3, at home.

Following this weekend’s activity, Tech will take next week off before facing road matches at No. 29 Virginia Commonwealth on Sat., March 5 at 11 a.m., and at No. 23 Virginia on Sun., March 6 at 1 p.m.
