WEYMOUTH, Mass. –Virginia Tech lost another close match Saturday afternoon as the Hokies fell, 4-3, at Boston College in their ACC opener. The match was played at the Weymouth Club and saw the Hokies drop their third consecutive 4-3 decision
Tech (2-4, 0-1), which dropped 4-3 decisions last Sunday at home against No. 55 Marshall and on Friday at No. 64 Dartmouth, won the doubles point to open the match, but dropped four of the six singles contest in the loss. Boston College improved to 3-3 on the year and 2-0 in the ACC.
In singles, Martha Blakely (Jr., Reading, Pa.) won, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 2 versus Katharine Attwell and Tech’s other singles win was at No. 6 as Isel Martinez-Marcos (Fr., Esparreguera, Spain) defeated Ina Kauppila, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (7).
In other singles results, Yasmin Hamza (Sr., Cairo, Egypt) lost 7-6 (3), 6-2, at No. 1 to Alex Kelleher, Tea Ivanovic (Fr., Antwerpen, Belgium) fell, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 3 against Katarina Gajic, Holly Johnson (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.) lost, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 to Veronica Corning and Shannon Betts (Jr., Newnan, Ga.) dropped the No. 5 contest, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, versus Olga Khmylev.
Hamza/Johnson captured the No. 1 doubles match, 8-4, over Kauppila/Kelleher and Blakely/Courtney Rauscher (So., Evans, Ga.) took the No. 2 doubles match, 8-4, over Corning/ Haley Dixon. Ivanovic/Martinez-Marcos lost the No. 3 match, 8-5, to Attwell/Gajic.
Tech returns to action next weekend with a busy home schedule. The Hokies will play host to Maryland on Fri., Feb.19, at 1 p.m., followed by matches against Maryland-Baltimore County (9 a.m.) and Davidson (5 p.m.) on Sat., Feb. 20.
