HANOVER, N.H. –Virginia Tech’s women’s tennis team dropped its’ second consecutive tight match against a nationally-ranked opponent Friday afternoon as the Hokies fell, 4-3, at No. 64 Dartmouth. The match was the first-ever between the two programs and was played at the Boss Tennis Center.

Tech (2-3), which dropped a 4-3 decision last Sunday at home against No. 55 Marshall, lost the pivotal doubles competition and split the six singles matches in the loss. Dartmouth improved to 2-3 on the young season.

In singles, Yasmin Hamza (Sr., Cairo, Egypt) upset 94th-ranked Molly Scott, 6-4, 6-1, in the No. 1 match. Tech’s other singles wins were recorded by freshmen Tea Ivanovic (Antwerpen, Belgium) and Isel Martinez-Marcos. Ivanovic defeated Ryan Reichel, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 4 and Martinez-Marcos took a come-from-behind, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3, win at No. 6 over Georgie Smyser.

In other singles results, Martha Blakely (Jr., Reading, Pa.) lost, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 2 against Melissa Matsuoka, Holly Johnson (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.) dropped her No. 3 match, 6-4, 6-2, to Sarah Leonard and Shannon Betts (Jr., Newnan, Ga.) lost, 6-1, 7-6 (6), at No. 5, versus Sabrina Stewart.

Blakely/Courtney Rauscher (So., Evans, Ga.) took the No. 2 doubles match, 8-4, over R. Reichel/Smyser, but the Big Green won the No. 1 match, 8-5, as Hamza/Johnson lost to Matsuoka/Scott. The No. 3 match went the distance as Betts/Emily Lauten (So., Marietta, Ga.) lost, 9-8 (8), to Jeri Reichel/Stewart in the deciding doubles point match.

The Hokies will play at Boston College in the ACC opener on Sat., Feb. 12 at 3 p.m.
