BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 11 Tennessee women’s tennis team proved to be too much for Virginia Tech Saturday afternoon as the Volunteers defeated the Hokies, 6-1, at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. Tech suffered its first loss of the young season to fall to 2-1, while Tennessee improved to 4-0.

Tennessee swept all three doubles matches for the first point of the day, then took five of the six singles contests for the win.

In singles, Martha Blakely (Jr., Reading, Pa.) dropped the No. 1 match to Natalie Pluskota, 7-5, 6-2, and Yasmin Hamza (Sr., Cairo, Egypt) fell, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0, at No. 2 against 20th-ranked Brynn Boren. Elsewhere, Holly Johnson (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.) lost her No. 3 match, 6-0, 6-4, to 87th-ranked Rosalia Alda, Tea Ivanovic (Fr., Antwerp, Belgium) fell, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 4 against Kata Szekely and Shannon Betts (Jr., Newnan, Ga.) dropped the No. 5 match, 6-3, 6-4, to Mille Nichols. Tech picked up its lone point of the day as Emily Lauten (So., Marietta, Ga.) won, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0, at No. 6 versus Whitney Wofford.

In doubles, Hamza/Johnson lost the No. 1 match, 8-4, to Boren/Pluskota and Blakely/Rauscher dropped their No. 2 contest, 8-2, against ninth-ranked Alda/Nichols. Ivanovic/Isel Martinez-Marcos (Fr., Esparreguera, Spain) lost, 8-2, at No. 3 versus Jennifer Meredith/Szekely.

The Hokies will play host to No. 55 Marshall on Sunday at 1 p.m.
