BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s team completed a sweep on opening day of the 2011 dual schedule with a, 6-1, win over UNC Greensboro Sunday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. Tech, which defeated Richmond, 6-1, earlier in the day, improved to 2-0, while UNCG fell to 0-1.

Tech won two of the three doubles matches to capture the first point of day, then took five of the six singles matches for the victory.

In singles, Yasmin Hamza (Sr., Cairo, Egypt) won her No. 2 match, 6-2, 6-1, over Alex Whitehead and Holly Johnson (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.) easily defeated Stephanie Macfarlane, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3. Tea Ivanovic (Fr., Antwerp, Belgium) cruised past Dilara Yurtkuran, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4, Emily Lauten (So., Marietta, Ga.) won, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 5 contest versus Lucy Dougherty and Isel Martinez-Marcos (Fr., Esparreguera, Spain) took the No. 6 match, 6-2, 6-1 over Mikayla Rogers. Martha Blakely (Jr., Reading, Pa.) lost her No. 1 match, 7-5, 6-4, against Niltooli Wilkins.

Tech opened the match in doubles with Hamza/Johnson winning at No. 1, 8-3, over Dougherty/Wilkins and Katie Blow (Jr., Richmond, Va.)/Ivanovic winning, 8-6, at No. 3 against Annette Rios/Yurtkuran. The Hokies lost the No. 2 match as Shannon Betts (Jr., Newnan, Ga.)/Lauten fell, 8-3, to Macfarlane/Whithead.

The Hokies return to action on Feb. 5 at noon, when they play host to No. 12 Tennessee.
