Blakely falls in USTA/ITA Atlantic Championships semifinal
Hamza/Johnson eliminated in doubles quarterfinals

NORFOLK, Va. – After upsetting two seeded players, Virginia Tech’s Martha Blakely narrowly missed a third before falling in the semifinals Sunday afternoon at the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Women’s Atlantic Region Championships. The event, hosted by Old Dominion University, featured some of the top players in the nation and is being held at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center.

Blakely (Jr., Reading, Pa.), who upset No. 10 seed Jordaan Sanford (Maryland), 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, in her second match in Saturday’s Round of 16, defeated No. 4 seed Emily Fraser (Virginia), 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5), in the Sunday morning quarterfinal. However, in the semifinal against No. 5 seed Petra Januskova (Penn State), Blakely lost a tough, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, contest.

Elsewhere, Holly Johnson (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.) defeated Olga Teuteac (VCU), 6-4, 6-3, in a consolation match

In doubles, Hamza/Johnson, seeded No. 5 and ranked No. 34 nationally, dropped their quarterfinal to 9-16 seed Maria Fuccillo/Rashmi Teltumbde (Virginia). 8-4.

The Hokies conclude the fall individual season on Nov. 5-7, at the UCF Quad in Orlando, Fla.
