BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team had a very successful day on Friday as host of the 17th Annual Hokie Fall Invitational. The event features 100 players from 15 teams and 26 countries. The tournament, which runs through Sunday, is being held at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. Both the indoor and outdoor courts are being utilized during the tournament with play to begin at 9 a.m. each day. Admission is free.
The event features players from Davidson, East Carolina, East Tennessee State, James Madison, Liberty, Louisville, Marshall, Maryland-Baltimore County, Radford, Richmond, Penn State, UNC Wilmington, William & Mary, Winthrop and host Virginia Tech.
In singles, Holly Johnson, Shannon Betts, Martha Blakely, and Isel Martinez-Marcos advanced to the Flight A-D singles semifinals respectively. Katie Blow moved into the Flight F semis as did Megan Conley in Flight G. With the exception of Conley, all of the Tech players won two singles matches.
Tech also advanced three doubles teams to the quarterfinals of their respective flights. Yasmin Hamza/Johnson, ranked No. 34 nationally, advanced into the Flight A quarters while Martinez-Marcos/Courtney Rauscher and Blow/Emily Lauten advanced to the Flight C quaterfinals.
Saturday’s action opens with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles. Finals in all flights will be held on Sunday.
