Ivanovic advances at Radford Fall Tournament
Hokies see mixed results on first day

RADFORD, Va. – On a day which saw mixed results for four members of the Virginia Tech women’s tennis team, freshman Tea Ivanovic advanced to the Flight A semifinals on the first day of the inaugural Radford Fall Tournament. The two day event is being played Friday and Saturday at the Radford Tennis Complex and at the Bisset Park courts.

Ivanovic (Fr., Antwerpen, Belgium) won her opening match in comfortable fashion, 6-3, 6-2, over Ruxandra Andriescu (James Madison) to advance to Saturday’s semifinals. Elsewhere the Hokies singles results were not as positive. Katie Blow (Jr., Richmond, Va.) dropped her A1 Flight match, 6-3, 6-3, versus Megan Douglass (James Madison) and Megan Conley (So., Knoxville, Tenn.) lost, 6-1, 6-0, in Flight B against Jacqueline Palmucci (JMU). Both Blow and Conley will see action on Saturday in the consolation.

In doubles action to start the day, Blow/Courtney Rauscher (Jr., Evans, Ga.) won their opening Flight A match, 8-3, over Katherine Bulling/Leah Demasters (James Madison), but dropped the semifinal, 8-2, versus Mirna Matic/Ivana Tomaic (Radford). Conley/Ivanovic dropped their Flight B opener, 8-5, versus Hannah Fick/Jordan Jenkins (Liberty), and lost, 8-3, to Mia Drobnak/Sara Tegner (Raford) in the consolation.

In addition to host Radford, the tourney includes players representing Appalachian State, James Madison, Liberty, Longwood and Virginia Tech. The event includes six singles brackets and one doubles bracket. The doubles final and singles semifinals and finals will be played Saturday in all flights.

Following this weekend’s action, Tech will host the 17th Annual Hokie Fall Invitational, Oct. 1-3, at the Burleson-Burrows Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus.
