Hokies see mixed results in two tournaments
Tech opens fall season in William & Mary and UNCW Invites

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Yasmin Hamza and Tea Ivanovic were the only Tech singles players to advance in the first round flight on the first day of the 18th Annual William and Mary Invitational in Williamsburg, Va.. The three-day event, being played at facilities throughout Williamsburg, includes 13 programs from across the country competing in five singles flights and three doubles brackets.

In addition to host William & Mary, the tourney includes players representing Columbia, Eastern Michigan, Marshall, Maryland, Winthrop, Penn, ODU, VCU, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Harvard and Richmond.

Hamza (Sr., Cairo, Egypt) defeated Julia Huschke (Maryland), 6-3, 6-1, in the Flight A doubles, before dropping a 6-1, 6-3, decision against No. 45 and second-seed Lindsey Hardenburgh. Tech’s other opening round singles came in Flight D as Ivanovic (Fr., Antwerpen, Belgium) won her collegiate debut with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-0, upset over No. 3 seed Chelsea Davis (Columbia). Ianvovic lost, 7-6, 6-3, to Odaria Yakauleva (ODU) in the quarterfinals.

Tech recorded one doubles which occurred in Flight B as the No. 4 seeds, Shannon Betts (Jr., Newnan, Ga.)/Isel Martinez-Marcos (Fr., Esparreguera, Spain), defeated Donnet/Rivero (Eastern Michigan), 8-5. All competitors are guarantied at least three matches in the event.

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Virginia Tech advanced three players in singles competition and one doubles team on the first day of the UNCW Collegiate Tennis Invitational presented by RBC Wealth Management. The three-day event is being played at the Cliff Drysdale Tennis Center. The event includes players from host UNCW, Virginia Tech, Georgetown, and Furman who are competing in four flights of singles and one flight of doubles.

Holly Johnson (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.) held on to defeat Stephanie Wenmore (GT), 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (2), in Flight A1 and Emily Lauten (So., Marietta, Ga.), seeded second in Flight A2, won a tough, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (6), match against Susan Bitetti (Furman). Martha Blakely (Jr., Reading, Pa.), the No. 2 seed in Flight B1, easily advanced with a 6-2, 6-1, win over Jenny Porter (Furman). All three will see semifinal action Saturday morning. Megan Conley (So., Knoxville, Tenn.) dropped her B1 match, 6-1, 6-2, versus Christina Riley (UNCW) and will see action in Saturday’s consolation.

In doubles, Blakely/Johnson defeated Murray/Stanford (Furman), 8-4, in the first round and advanced to the semifinals with a convincing, 8-1, win over Lee/Sekely (UNCW). Conley/Lauten received a bye then lost in the quarterfinals, 8-5, to Blank/Lehlang (UNCW) and will play in the consolation round on Saturday.
