BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team will open the fall individual season on two fronts with six players participating in the William and Mary Invitational in Williamsburg, Va., while four others will playing in the UNCW Collegiate Tennis Invitational in Wilmington, N.C.
The 18th annual William and Mary Invitational, Sept. 10-12, will be played at facilities throughout Williamsburg. The three-day event will include 13 programs from across the country and include five singles flights and three doubles brackets.
Virginia Tech players include Yasmin Hamza (Cairo, Egypt), Shannon Betts (Newnan, Ga.), Isel Martinez-Marcos (Esparreguera, Spain), Tea Ivanovic (Antwerpen, Belgium), Katie Blow (Richmond, Va.) and Courtney Rauscher (Evans, Ga.)
In addition to host William & Mary, the tourney includes Columbia, Eastern Michigan, Marshall, Maryland, Winthrop, Penn, ODU, VCU, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Harvard and Richmond to the Invitational. The event began in 1993 and has become one of the top college women’s tennis tournaments on the East Coast. The competition will be played throughout Williamsburg at the Millie West Tennis Facility, the Rec. Courts and the Kiwanis Courts.
Friday will begin with a round of doubles followed by two rounds of singles. On Saturday, competition will open with two rounds of doubles followed by a solo round of singles. The final day of the event, Sunday, will be the championship and consolation rounds of both singles and doubles. Play begins each day at 9 a.m. with the Flight A and B of singles and doubles both taking place at the Millie West Tennis Facility. Flight C and D of singles will be played at the Kiwanis Courts, located near Plumeri Park and Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field behind the Dillard Complex. Flight E in singles and Flight C in doubles will take place at the Rec Courts, which are located adjacent to the Cafeteria on Ukrop Way.

The UNCW Collegiate Tennis Invitational presented by RBC Wealth Management, Sept. 10-12, will be played at the Cliff Drysdale Tennis Center. The event includes players from host UNCW, Virginia Tech, Georgetown, and Furman who four flights of singles and one flight of doubles.
Tech’s Holly Johnson (Tallahassee, Fla.), Emily Lauten (Marietta, Ga.), Megan Conley (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Martha Blakely (Reading, Pa.) are participating in the event.
Play begins at 8:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and Sunday at 10 a.m.
