Blakely named to Academic All-District Team
Tech player now eligible for national honor

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Martha Blakely, a sophomore women’s tennis player from Reading, Pa., has been named to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American District III At-large University Division team. Blakely was a first-team selection, which was determined by voting members of CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America. She is now eligible for the national team which will be announced later this month.

To qualify for the honor, a student-athlete must be of a least a sophomore standing, have been enrolled at their current school for at least one year, have a minimum of 3.3 grade point average, and be a starter or significant reserve on their team. District III is comprised of schools in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

“I am very proud of Martha’s academic achievements and being selected for this honor,” said Virginia Tech head coach Terry Ann Zawacki-Woods. “I am excited for her to be recognized and rewarded for her efforts. Martha displays the same work ethic in the classroom as he does on the court.”

Blakely is majoring in biochemistry, chemistry and mathematics and received the Skelton Award, given to the top Virginia Tech female scholar-athlete, at the Tech All-sports banquet on May 3. She has been selected to both the Dean’s List and Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and was a member of the 2009 All-ACC Academic Women’s Tennis team as well as the 2009 ACC Academic Honor Roll.
