CARY, N.C. - The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team dropped it opening round match, 4-1, against 20th-ranked Georgia Tech in the ACC Women’s Tennis Championships being played at the Cary Tennis Center. The Hokies, seeded tenth in the event, fall to 10-13 on the year, while the Yellow Jackets, the No. 7 seed, improve to 15-9 and will play the No. 2 seed and 11-ranked Miami in the Friday quarterfinals.

Georgia Tech took two of the three doubles matches for the first point and then won three of the four completed singles matches for the victory. The dual match was halted once the Yellow Jackets had clinched the victory.

After taking the doubles point, Georgia Tech increased the advantage to 3-0 as Courtney Rauscher (So., Evans, Ga.) lost the No. 5 match, 6-1, 6-2, to Elizabeth Kilborn and Yasmin Hamza (Jr., Cairo, Egypt) fell, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 versus the top player in the nation, Irina Falconi. Holly Johnson (Jr., Tallahassee, Fla.) got the Hokies on the board with a, 6-4, 6-2, win over Hillary Davis at No. 6, however Georgia Tech clinched the victory as Emily Lauten (Fr., Marietta, Ga.) lost the No. 4 contest, 6-2, 6-4, versus Lynn Blau. The remaining singles matches were halted in progress once the Yellow Jackets had clinched the dual match.

In doubles, Johnson/Rauscher lost their No. 3 match, 8-2, against Kilborn/Viet Ha Ngo, but the Hokies pulled even as Hamza/Lauten defeated Blau/Davis, 8-6, at No 2. The Yellow Jackets clinched the double point as Shannon Betts (So., Newnan, Ga.)/Martha Blakely (So., Reading, Pa.) lost the No. 1 match, 8-5, versus Falconi/Krupina.
