BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team dropped a tight, 4-3, decision Saturday afternoon at No. 50 Wake Forest. Tech falls to 9-9 and 2-6 in the ACC with the loss, while Wake Forest improves to 8-11 and 2-5 in league action.

The Demon Deacons swept the three doubles matches for the first point of the day, then split the six singles contests in the victory.

In singles action, Wake Forest took a 2-0 lead as Martha Blakely (So., Reading, Pa.) dropped the No. 2 match, 6-0, 6-0, to Sasha Kulikova, before the Hokies got on the board with Shannon Betts’ (So., Newnan, Ga.), 6-3, 6-3, win at No. 3 over Kathryn Talbert. Wake extended the lead when Emily Lauten (Fr., Marietta, Ga.) lost, 6-1, 7-5, in her No. 4 contest versus Emilee Malvehy. The Demon Deacons clinched the win as Yasmin Hamza (Jr., Cairo, Egypt) dropped a tough, 6-2, 6-7 (1), 6-2, No. 1 match against 64th-ranked Martina Pavelec.

In the remaining singles matches, Courtney Rauscher (So., Evans, Ga.) defeated Katarina Reveche, 2-6, 6-1, 7-5, in the No. 5 match and Holly Johnson (Jr., Tallahassee, Fla.) won her No. 6 match, 7-6, 7-5, over Ryan Cutillo.

In doubles, Hamza/Johnson lost, 8-2, at No. 1 to 64th-ranked Kulikova/Talbert and Betts/Blakely dropped the No. 2 match, 8-5, versus Aileen Davis/Malvehy which clinched the doubles point. Lauten/Rauscher fell, 8-5, at No. 3 to Pavelec/Reveche.

Tech will stay on the road for a Sunday, 1 p.m., match at No. 32 NC State.
