BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision Saturday afternoon to No. 1 North Carolina at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Tech falls to 9-8 and 2-5 in the ACC, while UNC improves to 19-3 and 5-0 in league action.

The Tar Heels won two of the three doubles matches for the first point of the day, before sweeping all six singles contests in the victory.

In singles action, UNC took a 3-0 lead as Martha Blakely (So., Reading, Pa.) lost the No. 1 match, 6-0, 6-1, against 32nd-ranked Sanaz Marand and Emily Lauten (Fr., Marietta, Ga.) dropped her No. 4 match to 118th-ranked Sophie Grabinski, 6-1, 6-2. The Tar Heels clinched the match as Holly Johnson (Jr., Tallahassee, Fla.) lost, 6-4, 6-1, in the No. 6 match versus Shinann Featherston.

UNC completed the singles sweep as No. 51 Katrina Tsang defeated Yasmin Hamza (Jr., Cairo, Egypt), 6-4, 6-3, at No. 1, Zoe De Bruychker took the No. 5 contest, 6-3, 6-1, over Courtney Rauscher (So., Evans, Ga.) and Jelena Durisic won, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (6), at No. 3 versus Shannon Betts (So., Newnan, Ga.).

In doubles, Betts/Rauscher lost the No. 3 match, 8-2, to Jocelyn Ffriend/Haley Hamm and the Tar Heels clinched the point as Blakely/Lauten dropped the No. 2 match, 8-4, against 27th-ranked Featherston/Tsang. The Hokies did pull off a major upset as Hamza/Johnson defeated the 11th-ranked duo of Grabinski/Marand, 8-5.

Tech returns to action next week with road matches at No. 30 NC State on Friday, April 11, at 1 p.m., followed by a Saturday, April 12, contest at noon against No. 43 Wake Forest.
