Tech women host Top Five Opponents
No. 5 Duke and No. 1 UNC up next for Hokies

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team will host some of the nation’s best this weekend at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. The Hokies will play No. 5 Duke on Friday at 2 p.m., and host No. 1 North Carolina Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Hokies (9-6, 2-3) dropped two ACC road matches last weekend at No. 11 Miami (1-5) and at No. 17 Florida State (1-6). Yasmin Hamza (Jr., Cairo, Egypt) has posted a 11-4 singles record at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, while Shannon Betts (So., Newnan, Ga.) is 9-5 at No. 3 and No. 4.

Duke (15-2, 3-0) currently has a five-match winning streak including a pair of 7-0 victories last weekend at home against Boston College and Maryland. The Blue Devils feature three nationally ranked players including No. 39 Reka Zsilinszka, No. 40 Ellah Nze and No. 62 Elizabeth Plotkin. Amanda Granson/Nze are ranked No. 42 nationally in doubles, while Plotkin/Zsilinszka are No. 58 in the nation.

North Carolina (17-3, 4-0) defeated No. 43 Wake Forest, 5-2, at home on Wednesday afternoon and will play at No. 34 Virginia on Friday before facing the Hokies. The Tar Heels are led by No. 32 Sanas Marand, No. 51 Katrina Tsang and No. 118 Sophie Grabinski. UNC also features two nationally ranked doubles teams including No. 11 Grabinski/Marand and No. 27 Shinann Featherston/Tsang.

On Sunday, all children are invited to join the HokieBird in hunting Easter eggs outside the tennis center on the Virginia Tech Recreational Fields and are encouraged to stick around for an afternoon of tennis. Drinks and refreshments will be provided for all children and the child who finds the golden egg will win a football autographed by head football coach Frank Beamer.

The Easter egg hunt will begin at 1 pm. The HokieBird will also be available for photo opportunities at the conclusion of the hunt. Admission is free to the event and everyone is welcome.

Following this weekend’s action, Tech will play at No. 30 NC State on Friday, April 10 (1 p.m.) and at No. 43 Wake Forest on Saturday, April 11 (noon).
