BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision Sunday afternoon to No. 17 Florida State at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. Tech falls to 9-6 and 2-3 in the ACC, while Florida State improves to 8-7 and 2-2 in league action.

The match began with singles competition due to inclement weather in the Tallahassee area.

In singles action, Tech picked up its lone point of the day at No. 2 as Yasmin Hamza (Jr., Cairo, Egypt) defeated Francesca Segarelli, 7-6 (4), 6-1. The Hokies dropped the No. 1 match as Martha Blakely (So., Reading, Pa.) lost, 6-1, 6-1, to No. 27 Lauren McCreless and Shannon Betts (So., Newnan, Ga.) lost, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, at No. 3 against 104th-ranked Katie Rybakova. Emily Lauten (Fr., Marietta, Ga) fell, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 versus Jessica Sucupira, Courtney Rauscher (So., Evans, Ga.) dropped the No. 5 contest, 6-3, 6-3, to Fedrica Suess and Holly Johnson (Jr., Tallahassee, Fla.) lost, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 6 to Amy Sargeant.

In doubles, Hamza/Johnson dropped the No. 1 match, 8-5, to McCreless/Segarelli and Blakely/Lauten lost, 8-4, at No. 2 against Sucupira/Suess. The Seminoles completed the doubles sweep at No. 3 as Betts/Rauscher lost a tight, 9-8 (10), match to Rybakova/Sargeant.

Tech returns home next week for a Friday, April 2, contest against No. 8 Duke at 2 p.m. which will be followed by a Saturday contest at 1 p.m. versus No. 1 North Carolina.
