Hokies fall 5-1 at No.11 Miami

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team dropped a 5-1 decision Friday afternoon to No. 11 Miami at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Tech falls to 9-5 and 2-2 in the ACC, while Miami improves to 11-3 and 5-0 in league action.

The match began with singles competition due to inclement weather in the Coral Gables area and the contest was delayed an hour and a half due to weather.

In singles action, Tech picked up its lone point of the afternoon at No. 6 as Holly Johnson (Jr., Tallahassee, Fla.) defeated Claudia Wasilewski, 7-6 (1), 6-4. The Hurricanes took the other five matches in straight sets as Martha Blakely (So., Reading, Pa.) lost 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 to seventh-ranked Laura Valverdu and Yasmin Hamza (Jr., Cairo, Egypt) fell, 6-0, 6-4, in her No. 2 contest versus 62nd-ranked Anna Bartenstein.

In other singles results, Shannon Betts (So., Newnan, Ga.) lost, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 3 to 33rd-ranked Bianca Eichkorn, Emily Lauten (Fr., Marietta, Ga.) fell, 6-2, 6-1, to Danielle Mills at No. 4 and Courtney Rauscher (So., Evans, Ga.) lost, 7-5, 6-3, in her No. 5 match versus No. 107 Gabriela Mejia.

The Hokies remain in the Sunshine State for a Sunday contest at No. 17 Florida State.
