BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team will travel to the Sunshine State this weekend for matches at No. 11 Miami and at No. 17 Florida State. The Hokies and Hurricanes will play Friday at 4 p.m., in Coral Gables, Fla., and the Florida State match will be held Sunday at noon in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Hokies (9-4, 2-1) split two ACC home matches last weekend defeating Boston College, 5-2, before dropping a 5-2 decision against No. 27 Virginia. Yasmin Hamza (Jr., Cairo, Egypt) has posted a 9-2 singles record at the No. 3 position, while Shannon Betts (So., Newnan, Ga.) is 8-2 at No. 4. Courtney Rauscher (So., Evans, Ga.) has continued her solid play at No. 5 with a 7-2 mark.
Miami (9-3, 3-0) is riding a six-match winning streak including a 5-2 win at Florida State last week. The Hurricanes feature four nationally ranked players including No. 7 Laura Vallverdu, No. 33 Blanca Eichkorn, No. 62 Anna Bartenstein and No. 107 Gabriela Meja. Meja/Vallverdu are ranked No. 7 nationally in doubles, while Barenstein/Eichkorn are No. 64 in the nation.
Tech is 0-5 against Miami since joining the ACC and dropped a 6-1 home contest last year to the Hurricanes.
Florida State (6-7, 0-2) has faced 13 matches against nationally ranked opponents, including five versus top-10 teams. The Seminoles dropped their only match last week against Miami and had the Georgia Tech contest rained out. FSU is led by No. 27 Lauren McCreless along with No. 44 Noemie Scharle and No. 104 Katie Rybakova.
The Hokies are 0-5 against the Seminoles in ACC matches with Florida State winning 5-2 last year in Blacksburg, Va.
Following this weekend’s action, Tech will return home for matches against No. 8 Duke on Friday, April 2 at 2 p.m., and Saturday, April 3, versus No. 1 North Carolina in a 1 p.m. match.
