BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team saw a six-match winning come to end Sunday afternoon with a 5-2 loss to No. 27 Virginia at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Tech falls to 9-4 and 2-1 in the ACC, while Virginia improves to 10-3 and 3-0 in league action.

Tech, ranked No. 60 in this week’s ITA national poll, dropped all three doubles matches to lose the first point of the evening, then lost four of the six singles contests.

The Hokies picked up singles wins at No. 5 as Emily Lauten (Fr., Marietta, Ga.) took a, 6-2, 7-5, win against Maria Fuccillo and Holly Johnson (Jr., Tallahassee, Fla.) won, 7-6 (2), 6-1, at No. 6 over Katie Gater.

In other singles action, Martha Blakely (So., Reading, Pa.) dropped the No. 1 match, 6-1, 6-2, to No. 41 Lindsey Hardenbergh, while Yasmin Hamza (Jr., Cairo, Egypt) fell, 6-2, 7-6 (4), at No. 2 to Emily Fraser. Shannon Betts (So., Newnan, Ga.) lost, 6-1, 6-7 (4), 1-0 (5), at No. 3 to Erin Vierra and Courtney Rauscher (So., Evans, Ga.) lost, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 4 match versus Hana Tomljanovic.

The Cavaliers swept all three doubles matches as Blakely/Lauten fell, 8-4, to the 50th-ranked Hardenbergh/Vierra at No. 1 and Hamza/Johnson lost, 8-3, in the No. 2 contest versus Frasier/Fuccillo. Virginia completed the doubles sweep as Betts/Rauscher dropped their No. 3 match, 8-4, against Gater/Tomljanovic.

The Hokies take to road next week for a Friday match at No. 13 Miami and a Sunday contest at No. 19 Florida State.
