BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team returns to action at 11 a.m., Friday, when the Hokies travel to College Park, Md., to face the Maryland Terrapins in Tech’s ACC opener. The Hokies are 4-3 on the year after splitting two home matches last Saturday against No. 29 VCU (2-5) and Davidson (4-3).
Shannon Betts (So., Newnan, Ga.) and Yasmin Hamza (Jr., Cairo, Egypt) lead Tech with 5-2 dual match records followed Courtney Rauscher (So., Evans, Ga.) who is 4-2 in dual match singles action.
Maryland (1-3, 0-1) will be playing its fifth consecutive home match to open the season and has had three other home contests postponed by snow. The Terps lone win occurred last Saturday with a, 7-0, win over Penn. Maryland opened the season with home losses to No. 51 Long Beach State (1-6), Boston College (2-5) and Rutgers (3-4).
Maryland leads the series, 7-5, however Tech has won the last three meetings and holds a 3-2 advantage in ACC contests.
Following this Friday’s action, Tech will host Louisville on March 5, in a 5 p.m. match at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center before hosting South Alabama for a noon contest on March 7.
