Hokies prevail over Davidson, 4-3
Tech takes two of three doubles matches to squeak out victory.

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team came out even on Saturday, squeaking out a 4-3 victory over Davidson at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center, after falling to VCU earlier in the day. The Hokies, who move to 4-3 on the season, handed Davidson their first loss on the young season, as the Wildcats move to 4-1.

Tech won three of the singles matches and earned two crucial victories in the doubles matches en route to victory.

In singles, Martha Blakely (Reading, Pa.) took the loss to Virginia Berry in the No. 1 slot, but the Hokies then saw three straight victories in the 2, 3 and 4 matches. Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) dominated Alison Rauh, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, while Yasmin Hamza (Cairo, Egypt) also earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Teresa Wang in the No. 3 match.

In other singles results, Shannon Betts (Newnan, Ga.) prevailed over Ali Gores, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 and winning the tiebreaker 7-3. Stephani Synn defeated Emily Lauten (Marietta, Ga.), 6-3, 7-5 in the No. 5 match. In the No. 6 match, Katie Blow (Richmond, Va.) fell to Samantha Galainena, 6-1, 6-1.

Tech stepped its game up in the doubles matches as Betts/Newman and Hamza/Holly Johnson both earned 8-1 victories over Rauh/Synn and Galainena/Dicconson, respectively, at the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. The Wildcats took the No. 1 match as Berry/Wang defeated Blakely/Lauten 8-5.

Next up, the Hokies will travel to College Park, Md., to take on the Maryland Terrapins on Friday, Feb. 26, at 11 am.
