BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team will return to action this Saturday when the Hokies play two home matches at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. The Hokies will play No. 29 Virginia Commonwealth at 11 a.m., followed by a 4 p.m. match against Davidson.
Virginia Tech (3-2), ranked No. 61 in this week’s ITA national poll, dropped a 5-2 decision at No. 69 Marshall last weekend. Yazmin Hamza (Jr., Cairo, Egypt) and Emily Lauten (Fr., Marietta, Ga.) recorded Tech’s two points against the Thundering Herd.
Lauten leads the Hokies with a 2-0 dual match record followed by Hamza and Shannon Betts (So., Newnan, Ga.) who each have posted 4-1 singles records.
Virginia Commonwealth (5-2) swept two matches at home last week defeating No. 27 Florida International, 6-1, and blanking Temple, 7-0. The Rams won last year’s match, 6-1, in Richmond, Va., and lead the series, 14-9.
Davidson (4-0) opened the dual match season with home victories over South Carolina State (4-3), Wingate (7-0), North Carolina A&T (7-0) and Gardner-Webb (4-3). The Wildcats will play at Radford on Friday, Feb. 19, before making the short drive for Saturday’s contest. Tech won last year’s match, 7-0, in Blacksburg, Va., and leads the series 15-0.
Following this weekend’s action, Tech will travel to College Park, Md., on Feb. 26, for the 11 a.m., ACC opener at Maryland.
