Hokies cross the border to face Thundering Herd
Tech looks to improve on 3-1 record

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team will return to action this Saturday when the Hokies travel to Huntington, W.Va., to face No. 69 Marshall. The noon contest will be played at the Huntington Tennis Club.

Virginia Tech (3-1), ranked No. 49 in this week’s ITA national poll, won one match last weekend and lost to two others to Mother Nature. The Hokies defeated East Tennessee State, 5-2, on Saturday, but had Sunday home contests against No. 10 Tennessee and Liberty cancelled due to heavy snow in the New River Valley.

The Hokies continue to receive solid play from the middle of the line up led by Shannon Betts (So., Newnan, Ga.) who has a perfect 4-0 mark at the No. 4 position. Yasmin Hamza (Jr., Cairo, Egypt) and Courtney Rauscher (So., Evans, Ga.) each have posted 3-1 marks at the No. 3 and No. 5 positions, respectively.

Marshall (7-0) is off to a fast start and defeated No. 71 Miami (Ohio), 6-1, and No. 31 Kentucky, 6-1, in the last two matches. The Herd, who have not lost more than a single point in any match thus far, have outscored the opposition, 46-3, so far this season. Tech edged Marshall, 4-3, last season at home.

Tech returns to the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on Sat., Feb. 20, for a doubleheader against No. 36 Virginia Commonwealth (11 a.m.) and Davidson (4 p.m.).
