ATHENS, Ga. - Virginia Tech bounced back Saturday from a loss to No. 4 Georgia to defeat No. 51 Georgia State, 5-2, in a consolation match at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Athens, Ga. Regional. The match was played at the Hopkins Indoor Courts on the University of Georgia campus.

Tech (2-1) , ranked No. 55 in the ITA preseason national poll, won one match and received a default in doubles to capture the first point, then took four of the six singles contests.

In singles action, Holly Johnson (Jr., Tallahassee, Fla.) won her No. 6 match by default to give Tech a 2-0 advantage. Yasmin Hamza (Jr., Cairo, Egypt) continued her solid play easily defeating Kir Kemp, 6-1, 6-0, in the No. 3 match. Georgia State registered its lone point of the morning as No. 42 Diana Nakic defeated No. 96 Martha Blakely (So., Reading, Pa.), 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1. Tech clinched the match as Shannon Betts (So., Newnan, Ga.) easily won the No. 4 event, 6-1, 6-2, versus Katerina Gresova.

In other single results, Christin Newman (Fr., Greensboro, N.C.) lost to Tereza Lerova, 2-6, 7-6, 1-0, at No. 2, and Courtney Rauscher (So., Evans, Ga) defeated Linda Hricistova, 6-4, 6-7, 1-0, in the No. 5 match. Super tiebreakers were utilized in both matches in lieu of a third set since the Hokies had already clinched the team match.

The Hokies had no trouble in the doubles competition to open the match as Hamza/Lauten won by default at No. 3, then Blakely/Johnson clinched the point with an 8-2 win at No. 2 over Gresova/Kemp. Betts/Newman trailed Lerova/Nakic, 6-4, when the match was halted once the Hokies had clinched the point.

The Hokies return to action Sat., Feb. 6, when they host East Tennessee State for a noon match at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus.
