BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech had no problems Wednesday night as the Hokies defeated Elon, 6-1, at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. The Hokies improve to 1-0 on the year while the Phoenix fall to 2-2 on the young season.

Virginia Tech, ranked No. 55 in the ITA preseason national poll, swept all three doubles matches to capture the first point, then took five of the six singles contests.

In singles action, Christin Newman (Fr., Greensboro, N.C.) defeated Paige Kensrue, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 2 position while Yasmin Hamza (Jr., Cairo, Egypt) won a tough 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7), match at No. 3 against Elisa Simonetti. The Hokies rolled through the bottom half of the competition as Shannon Betts (So., Newnan, Ga.) blanked Briana Berne, 6-0, 6-0, and Courtney Rauscher (So., Evans, Ga.) had no trouble at No. 5 in a, 6-2, 6-1, win over Lauren Semmons. Holly Johnson (Jr., Tallahassee, Fla.) capped off the Tech singles victories with a, 6-0, 6-0, shutout at No. 6 versus Laura Graybill.

Tech’s lone loss of the evening occurred at No. 1 as Anna Milian upset 96th-ranked Martha Blakely (So., Reading, Pa.), 6-4, 6-7 (6), 1-0 (7).

The Hokies had no trouble in the doubles competition to open the match with Betts/Newman winning, 8-1, at No. 1 over Milian/Simonetti and Blakely/Johnson defeating Kensrue/Daleen Kloppeers, 8-1, in the No. 2 match. Katie Blow (So., Richmond, Va.)/Hamza completed the doubles sweep with a, 8-2, win at No. 3 versus Berne/Graybill.

The Hokies return to action Jan. 29, when they travel to Athens, Ga. for a match against No. 4 Georgia in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
