SAVANNAH, Ga. – Two members of the Virginia Tech women’s tennis team are participating this weekend in The Landings Clay Court Collegiate Invitational being played at The Landing Club. The event divides players into two groups for singles play with a round robin format for doubles and includes players from two-time defending NCAA Division II National Champion Armstrong Atlantic State, The College of Charleston, Auburn-Montgomery and Virginia Tech.
In Friday singles action, Emily Lauten (Fr., Marietta, Ga.) dropped her opening Group 1 match, 6-2, 6-4, to Kathleen Henry (Armstrong Atlantic State). Katie Blow (So., Richmond, Va.) lost her first Group 2 match, 6-1, 6-0, against Tina Ronel (Armstrong Atlantic State). Ronel ended the 2008-09 season ranked No. 46 nationally in Division II singles. In her second match of the day, Blow dropped a tough, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3, contest to Irene Viana (College of Charleston).
The Tech duo bounced back to win their doubles match, 9-7, versus Hannah Appleyard/Whitney Byrd (Auburn-Montgomery). Play in the event continues on Saturday with Lauten playing two singles matches while Blow will have one more singles contest. The pair will also play doubles on Saturday.
