Hokies eliminated at Wilson/ITA Atlantic Championships
Newman, doubles teams fall in quarterfinals

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Freshman Christin Newman along with two doubles teams were eliminated Sunday in the quarterfinals at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Region Championships. The event is being played at the Burrows/Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus.

In singles, Newman (Greensboro, N.C.), the No. 8 seed, dropped her quarterfinal, 6-2, 7-6 (2), against No. 2 seed Lindsay Hardenbergh (Virginia).

In doubles action, qualifiers Shannon Betts (So., Newnan, Ga)/Newman (Fr., Greensboro, N.C.) saw their outstanding run in the tournament come to an end Sunday morning with a, 8-5, loss to the second seeded team of Michaela Kissell/Dominika Zaprazna (Marshall). Tech’s other team in the quarterfinals, Martha Blakely (So., Reading, Pa.)/Holly Johnson (Jr., Tallahassee, Fla.), the No. 5 seeds, lost a tight, 9-7, match to the No. 4 seeded team of Joanna Dobrowolska/Nadine Fahoum (ODU).

Play concludes in the tournament on Monday with the doubles semifinals scheduled at 10 a.m. followed by the singles championship at noon with the doubles final to follow.

The singles finalists and doubles champion from the tournament will earn spots in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, November 5-8, hosted by the Yale University in New Haven, Conn. The event continues through Oct. 26, and is being held at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus.
