BLACKSBURG, Va. – Freshman Christin Newman along with two Virginia Tech doubles teams advanced Saturday to the quarterfinals at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Region Championships. The event is being played at the Burrows/Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus.
In singles, Newman (Greensboro, N.C.), the No. 8 seed, defeated Lauren McCarthy (Penn State), 6-3, 6-3, in her first match of the day, then advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-5, 6-2, win over Carmen Pop (William & Mary). Newman will face No. 2 seed Lindsay Hardenbergh (Virginia) at 11:30 a.m.
In other singles results involving Tech players, qualifier Emily Lauten (Fr., Marietta, Ga.) was eliminated, 6-0, 6-3, by 9-16 seed Hana Tomjanovic (Virginia Commonwealth) and Shannon Betts (So, Newnan, Ga.) lost, 6-0, 7-6 (4), lost to Josefin Hjerquist (Virginia Commonwealth). Yasmin Hamza (Jr., Cairo, Egypt) dropped her match, 6-2, 7-6 (2), against Hardenbergh and Holly Johnson (Jr., Tallahassee, Fla.) fell, 6-3, 6-1, to 9-16 seed Alex Bara (Virginia Commonwealth). Martha Blakely (So., Reading, Pa), a 9-16 seed, was eliminated, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, by Kristina Koprcina (Marshall).
In doubles action, qualifiers Betts/Newman moved into the quarterfinals with a , 8-3 win over Mason Davis/Laura Simon (Longwood) and will play the second seeded team of Michaela Kissell/Dominika Zaprazna (Marshall) at 10 a.m. Blakely/Johnson, the No. 5 seeds, defeated Alice Chen/Carmen Jackman (UMBC), 9-7, and will face No. 4 seeds Joanna Dobrowolska/Nadine Fahoum (ODU) in another 10 a.m. quarterfinal match.
Play continues Sunday with the doubles quarterfinals at 10 a.m. followed by the singles quarterfinals and semifinals.
The singles finalists and doubles champion from the tournament will earn spots in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, November 5-8, hosted by the Yale University in New Haven, Conn. The event continues through Oct. 26, and is being held at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus.
