Hokies have a sweep day at the Wilson/ITA Atlantic Championships
Tech players roll to eight victories

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team made its presence felt Friday at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Region Championships. The Hokies swept both of their doubles matches and all six singles contests in an impressive performance.

In singles, Holly Johnson (Jr., Tallahassee, Fla.) rolled to a, 6-2, 6-2, win over Casey Robinson (St. Joseph’s) and will play 9-16 seed Alex Bara (Virginia Commonwealth) at 11:30 a.m. in the Round of 32. Martha Blakely (So., Reading, Pa.) cruised to a, 6-3, 6-1, victory over Jordan Hansbrough (Maryland) and will play Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against Kristina Koprcina (Marshall). Shannon Betts (So., Newnan, Ga.) posted an impressive, 6-3, 6-2, upset win over 9-16 seed Jordan Jenkins (Liberty) and will battle Josefin Hjerquist (Virginia Commonwealth) in a 9:30 a.m contest.

Emily Lauten (Fr., Marietta, Ga.), after winning two matches on Thursday in the qualifying, picked up a, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, win over Nadia Demidenko (George Washington). Lauten will face 9-16 seed Hana Tomjanovic (Virginia) in the Round of 32 on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Christin Newman (Fr., Greensboro, N.C.), seeded eighth, had no trouble in defeating qualifier Kara Kucin (Marshall), 6-0, 6-2, and will play Josefin Hjerquist (Virginia Commonwealth) Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Round of 32. Yamin Hamza (Jr., Cairo, Egypt) made it a perfect day for the Hokies with a, 6-4, 6-4, win over Nina Vulovich (WIlliam & Mary).

In doubles action, Betts/Newman, who won both of their Thursday qualifying matches to advance into the main draw, upset the eighth-seeded team of Alex Bara/Josefin Hjerquist (Virginia Commonwealth), 8-1. The Tech duo will face Mason Davis/Laura Simon (Longwood) Saturday at 8:30 a.m. in the Round of 16. Blakely/Johnson, the No. 5 seeds, defeated qualifiers Riley Blanks/Neela Vaez (Virginia), 9-7, to advance to a Round of 16 match against Alice Chen/Carmen Jackman (UMBC) at 8 a.m.

Play continues Saturday as the schedule begins with the Round of 16 doubles at 8 a.m. followed by two rounds of singles.

The singles finalists and doubles champion from the tournament will earn spots in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, November 5-8, hosted by the Yale University in New Haven, Conn. The event continues through Oct. 26, and is being held at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. Saturday’s schedule begins with the Round of 16 doubles at 8 a.m. followed by two rounds of singles.
