BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech will be hosting the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Women’s Atlantic Region Championships October 22-26. The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, November 5-8, hosted by the Yale University in New Haven, Conn. The event is being held at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus and admission is free. Results will be available at www.hokiesports.com/wtennis.
The tournament begins on Thursday, Oct. 22, with two rounds of qualifying singles and doubles competition with the main draw starting on Friday. The event features players from 26 schools throughout the region and will have a definite international flavor with 23 countries represented in the event.
In addition to host Virginia Tech, the event will feature the top players from Division I schools from: Bucknell, Georgetown, George Washington, Howard, James Madison, Liberty, Longwood, Marshall, Maryland, Maryland-Baltimore County, Morgan State, Navy, Norfolk State, Old Dominion, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Radford, Richmond, St. Joseph’s, Temple, Towson, Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth, West Virginia and William & Mary. The top seed in singles is Michaela Kissell (Marshall) who is ranked No. 36 nationally. Other nationally-ranked players include No. 54 Emily Fraser (Virginia), No. 73 Jenny Stevens (Virginia), No. 107 Ragini Archarya (William & Mary) and No. 116 Nadine Fahoum (Old Dominion). Stevens and Hana Tomjanovic (Virginia) are the top seeds in doubles.
Twenty-four Wilson/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women are taking place over the last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country.
The 2009 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the nation’s premier collegiate indoor tennis tournament, is the second of three national championship events for college tennis this season. The ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships feature a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for men and women, including: qualifiers from these Wilson/ITA Regional Championships held across the country, the ITA National Small College champions, top performers from the ITA All-American Championships and at-large wild card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee. Overall, more than 7,000 players from nearly 600 schools participate annually in the ITA Regional and National Intercollegiate Championships.
As the governing body of collegiate tennis the ITA promotes both the athletic and academic achievements of the collegiate tennis community. The ITA, which was founded in 1956 and is based in Skillman, N.J., administers numerous regional and national championships, the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit presented by the USTA, and the Campbell/ITA Rankings for men’s and women’s tennis at the NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College.
