Play concludes at Hokie Fall Invitational
Blow, Lauten win consolation matches

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Sophomore Katie Blow and freshman Emily Lauten each registered singles victories on the final day of the 16th Annual Hokie Fall Invitational. The event featured 65 players from 10 teams and was played at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. Both the indoor and outdoor courts were utilized during the three-day tournament.

The tournament featured players from Albany, Appalachian State, Davidson, East Tennessee State, Elon, Marshall, Radford, Tennessee Tech, Winthrop and Virginia Tech. The event included participants from 20 countries around the globe.

Blow (Richmond, Va.) won the Flight C main draw consolation bracket by cruising past Olivia Stannard (Appalachian State), 6-1, 6-1. In the Flight D third-place contest, Lauten (Marietta, Ga.) won a tight, 5-7, 6-0, 1-0 (4), match over Paula Pereira (Winthrop).

The Hokies struggled in the other two singles flights as Christin Newman (Fr., Greensboro, N.C.) lost, 6-3, 6-1, in the Flight A third-place match to Anna Milian (Elon), while Yasmin Hamza (Jr., Cairo, Egypt) dropped the Flight A fifth-place match, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (4), against Ellie Linsell (Appalachian State). Also in Flight A, Martha Blakely (So., Reading, Pa.) dropped the main draw consolation final, 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (8), versus Catherine Kellner (Marshall).

Shannon Betts (So., Newnan, Ga.) lost the Flight B fifth-place match, 6-2, 7-6 (3), to Kelly Holtzhausen (East Tennessee State) and Courtney Rauscher (So., Evans, Ga.) had to default her Flight B third-place contest against Diana Navrostskaya (East Tennessee State) due to a back injury suffered during Saturday’s singles action.

Tech dropped the Flight A doubles final as Blakely/Holly Johnson (Jr., Tallahassee, Fla.) lost, 8-1, against Michaela Kissell/Dominka Zaprazna (Marshall). Blow/Hamza dropped the third-place match in the same flight, 8-4, to Paula Jaime/Karina Kedzo (East Tennessee State).

In Flight B doubles, the Hokie duo of Betts/Rauscher defaulted the final against Deanna Bailey/Kara Kucin (Marshall) due to Rauscher’s previously mentioned injury. Lauten/Newman lost their third-place match, 8-1, versus Catherine Kellner/Isabell Raich (Marshall).

The Hokies return to action, Oct. 22-26, when they host the 2009 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Regional at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Two rounds of qualifying singles and doubles will be played on Thursday, Oct. 22, with the main draw starting on Friday, Oct. 23. Admission to the tournament is free with all main draw matches to be played indoors.
