Newman wins W&M Invitational title
Tech freshman concludes debut weekend with title

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. --- Virginia Tech freshman Christin Newman capped off her first collegiate tournament by winning the Flight B final at the 17th Annual William and Mary Invitational. The three-day event featured players from 11 teams was played throughout Williamsburg at the Busch Courts, the Recreation Courts and the Kiwanis Courts.

The flighted tournament included players from East Tennessee State, Harvard, Marshall, Maryland, Richmond, Penn State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Virginia Commonwealth, Winthrop and the host Tribe. The event was comprised of five singles flights and a trio of doubles flights.

Newman (Fr., Greensboro, N.C.), who upset the top seed in Flight B in the opening round on Friday and won two Saturday matches, defeated Isabell Raich (Marshall), 7-5, 6-1, in the morning final. In the Flight B consolation, Courtney Rauscher (So., Evans, Ga.) defeated Kelly Tidwell (Richmond), 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (3).

In Flight A singles consolation matches, Martha Blakely (So., Reading, Pa.) defeated Lauren McCarthy (Penn State), 6-3, 6-4, and Yasmin Hamza (Jr., Cairo, Egypt) cruised past Kelly Holtzhausen (East Tennessee State), 6-4, 6-0.

Shannon Betts (So., Newnan, Ga.) lost her Flight C consolation match, 6-3, 6-4, to Olena Leonchuk (Virginia Commonwealth) while in Flight D consolation action, Katie Blow (So., Richmond, Va.) won a tough, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (4), match over Michaela Stracar (Penn State).

In the Flight E consolation, Megan Conley (Knoxville, Tenn.) lost, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (7), to Catherine Crystal (Richmond) and Emily Lauten (Marietta, Ga.) came back to defeat Riley Blanks (Virginia), 6-7, 6-2, 1-0 (5).

In Flight A doubles consolation action, Hamza/Lauten lost, 8-5, to Hardenbergh/Vierra (Virginia) while Betts/Blakely dropped their consolation match, 8-0, to Norton/Rosekrans (Harvard).

In Flight B consolation matches, Newman/Rauscher defeated Grant/Tidwell (Richmond), 8-6, and Blow/Conley defeated the mixed team of Blanks (UVa)/Krutiyenko (Maryland), 9-8.

Tech will take some time off the next couple of weekends before hosting the Hokie Fall Invitational, Oct. 2-4, at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus.
