BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 62 Virginia Tech women’s tennis squad ended its regular season with a victory, capturing a 5-2 decision over No. 37 WakeForest on senior day at the Burrows-BurlesonTennisCenter in Blacksburg, Va.
The two teams split the first two singles matches, as Jessica Brouwer (Sr., Maarssen, The Netherlands) fell to Sierra Poske of Wake Forest, 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 2 singles match. The Hokies responded with a win at the No. 4 singles match, as Yasmin Hamza (So., Cairo, Egypt) downed the Demon Deacons’ Christian Tara, 6-3, 6-4.
Both squads stayed even as the Hokies captured the No. 3 singles match when Martha Blakely (Fr., Reading, Pa.) dropped Emilee Malvehy of Wake, 7-5, 6-2, but the Demon Deacons stayed alive with a victory at the No. 1 singles match. Sasha Kulikova beat Inga Beermann (Sr., Bad Salzuflen) of Tech, 6-4, 6-3 in the top match.
The Hokies finally put the Demon Deacons away at the No. 5 singles bout, with Courtney Rauscher (Fr., Evans, Ga.) outlasting Wake’s Ryan Cutillo in the first set 7-5, and then putting her away 6-1 in the second frame to seal the match for Tech. Holly Johnson (So., Tallahassee, Fla.) closed out the contest for Tech with a three-set victory over Katarina Reveche of Wake, 2-6, 7-6, 10-4 at the No. 6 singles match.
Tech captured the all-important doubles point as the Hokies won at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches. Brouwer/Johnson took the No. 1 doubles match, 8-3, over Kulikova/Poske of WakeForest to start off the Hokies day, but WakeForest evened up the doubles competition as the Demon Deacons’ tandem of Tara/Reveche beat the Hokies’ Hamza/Walker duo, 8-6. Tech wrapped up the doubles point though, as Blakely/Beerman staved off WakeForest’s Malvehy/Davis, 9-7, in the No. 2 doubles match.
The Hokies will next travel to Cary, N.C., for the ACC Championships on April 16-19. Results will be available on hokiesports.com following each match.
