BLACKSBURG, Va. Virginia Tech picked up its second conference win of the year with a 7-0 win over NC State Friday afternoon. The Hokies improved to 12-10 overall and 2-8 in the ACC while the Wolfpack fell to 4-16 and 1-9 in the conference. The victory was Tech’s first over NC State since joining the conference.

Tech took two of the three doubles matches for the first point and swept the six singles contests for the final margin.

In singles, the Hokies took a quick 3-0 advantage as Yasmin Hamza (So., Cairo, Egypt) cruised past Neils Barringer, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 and Martha Blakely (Fr., Reading, Pa.) took her No. 3 match, 6-2, 6-2, over Daria Petrovic.Tech clinched the match when Holly Johnson (So., Tallahassee, Fla.) took the No. 6 contest, 6-2, 6-2, versus Pender Sessoms.

Tech took a 6-0 lead as Courtney Rauscher (Fr., Evans, Ga.) took a 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (6), decision at No. 5 over Diana Mortlock and Inga Beermann (Sr., Bad Salzuflen) defeated Lenka Hojckova, 6-2, 7-6, at No. 1. The Hokies completed the singles sweep with Jessica Brower’s (Sr., Maarssen, The Netherlands), 7-6, 3-6, 1-0 (3), victory at No. 2 over Berkeley Brock.

In doubles, Beermann/Blakely blanked Barringer/Morlock, 8-0, at No. 2 and the Hokies clinched the point as Hamza/Abbey Walker (Sr., Lancaster, S.C.) won the No. 3 match, 8-4, over Brock/Semmons.Tech lost the remaining match at No. 1 as 55th-ranked Brouwer/Johnson were upset by Hojckova/Petrovic, 8-7 (7).

The Hokies return to action on Sunday, at 1 p.m., against #37 Wake Forest. Tech seniors Inga Beermann, Jessica Brouwer and Abbey Walker will be honored prior to the match.
