Virginia Tech (11-10), ranked No. 62 in this week’s ITA national poll, dropped the doubles, but posted four straight wins in singles action to claim the victory.
Hokie senior Jessica Brouwer (Maarssen, The Netherlands) tallied the first point for Tech after defeating Isabell Raich, 6-3, 6-0. Courtney Rauscher (Fr., Evans, Ga.) followed and gave the Hokies a 2-1 lead with a win in the fifth match, 7-5 and 7-6 (3) over Deanna Bailey.
Tech sophomore Holly Johnson (Tallahassee, Fla.) added the third point for the home squad. Johnson posted a 7-5,6-2 victory over Catherine Kellner of
The Thundering Herd scored the final two points in the match. No.76-ranked Kellie Schmitt and Marshall senior Jessica Keener each tallied wins in matches that took three-set contests.
In doubles competition, Tech posted the first win in match two. The Hokie squad of Blakley/Beermann took down Bailey/Keener of Marshall, 8-3. The Thundering Herd reeled off back-to-back wins in the first and third match. In match No. 1, the No. 55-ranked team of Brouwer/Johnson fell to Schmitt/Soor, 8-5, while Kellner/Lock captured the doubles point with a 9-7 win over the Hokies team of Hamza/Walker, 9-7.
Tech will conclude the regular season with home matches against NC State Friday at 2 p.m. and versus No. 37 Wake Forest Sunday at 2 p.m. Prior to Sunday’s match Tech seniors Inga Beermann, Jessica Brouwer and Abbey Walker will be honored.
