DURHAM, N.C. – Virginia Tech suffered its sixth consecutive loss Sunday afternoon with a 6-1 women’s tennis loss at No. 9 Duke. The match was held at Ambler Tennis Stadium on the
Duke swept the three doubles matches for the first point and won five of the six singles contests for the final margin.
In singles, Tech picked up its lone point of the day as Jessica Brouwer (Sr., Maarssen, The Netherlands) won her No. 2 match in a 6-2, 6-4, upset of 28th-ranked Ellah Nze. In other singles action, Mallory Cecil, ranked No.31 nationally, defeated Inga Beermann (Sr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany), 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 and 40th-ranked Reka Zsilinszka won the No. 3 match, 6-1, 6-0, over Tech’s Martha Blakely (Fr., Reading, Pa.).
Elsewhere, No. 75 Amanda Granson beat Yasmin Hamza (So., Cairo, Egypt), 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4, Melissa Mang defeated Courtney Rauscher (Fr., Evans, Ga.), 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 5 contest and Jessi Robinson won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 versus Shannon Betts (Fr., Newnan, Ga.).
In doubles, No. 18 Granson/Mang defeated Tech’s 55th- ranked Brouwer/Johnson, 8-5, at No. 1 and Cecil/Robinson took the No. 2 match, 8-4, over Beermann/Blakely. The Blue Devils completed the sweep winning the No. 3 match as Nze/Zsilinszka defeated Hamza/Abbey Walker (Sr., Lancaster, S.C.), 8-3.
