Tech falls to the Seminoles in a tight ACC battle

BLACKSBURG, Va.- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team fell to the Seminoles on Sunday at the Burrows-BurlesonTennisCenter on the Virginia Tech campus, 5-2. The Hokies, who are ranked No.54, are now 10-8 overall and 1-6 in the ACC.

In singles action, Florida States Noemie Scharle claimed the first singles point and tied the match 1-1, after she defeated Tech senior Jessica Brouwer (Maarssen, The Netherlands), 6-4 and 6-3. Inga Beermann (Sr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany) lost match No.1 to Seminole sophomore and No. 56-ranked Katie Rybakova, 6-3, 1-6 and 6-1. FloridaState took a 3-1 lead after Ania Rynorzewska posted a win over Courtney Rauscher (Fr., Evans, Ga.) in the fifth match, 6-1, 2-6 and 6-3.

Tech came back to take match No. 4, cutting into the Seminole lead, 3-2. Hokie sophomore Yasmin Hamza (Cairo, Egypt) took down No.76th-ranked Federica Suess, 3-6, 6-3 and 6-3. FloridaState secured the clinching point in the sixth match. Seminole junior Jessica Sucupira (Wente) defeated Holly Johnson (So., Tallahassee, Fla.), 6-1, 3-6 and 6-2. In the final singles match of the afternoon Martha Blakely (Fr., Reading, Pa.) fell to Seminole junior Lauren Mcfarlane, 5-7, 6-4, and 7-6.

The Hokies swept doubles play against the Seminoles. In match No.3 Hamza/Walker took down Davidson/Macfarlane of FloridaState, 8-5. The clinching point came in the second contest of doubles play. The Tech team of Blakely/Beermann won a tight match over the Seminole squad of Rybakova/Schorle 9-8 (3). Brower/Johnson won match No.1 over Sucuprira/Suess, 9-7.

Tech will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to North Carolina on April 4. Start time is slated for 11 a.m.
