No. 5 Miami defeats Tech, 6-1
Hokies take on Florida State Sunday

BLACKSBURG, Va. The fifth-ranked Miami Hurricanes lived up to their lofty ranking with a 6-1 women’s tennis victory over No. 54 Virginia Tech Saturday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. Miami improved to 17-3 overall and 6-1 in the ACC while Tech falls 10-7 and 1-5 in the conference.

Miami took two of the three doubles matches for the first point and won five of the six singles contests for the final margin.

In singles, Julia Cohen, ranked No. 6 nationally, defeated Inga Beermann (Sr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany), 6-1, 6-3, at No. 1 and 24th-ranked Laura Vallverdu won the No. 2 match, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, over Tech’s Jessica Brouwer (Sr., Maarssen, The Netherlands). Elsewhere, No. 50 Michaela Kissell beat Martha Blakely (Fr., Reading, Pa.), 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2, Bianca Eichkorn, ranked No. 40, eased past Yasmin Hamza (So., Cairo, Egypt), 6-1, 7-5, and Claudia Wasilewski took the No. 6 contest, 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (4), versus Holly Johnson (So., Tallahassee, Fla.).

Tech’s lone singles win occurred in the No. 5 match where Courtney Rauscher (Fr., Evans, Ga.) won, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (3), against Gabriela Mejia.

In doubles, No. 33 Kissell/Vallverdu defeated Brouwer/Johnson, 8-3, at No. 1 and the Hurricanes clinched the doubles point as Cohen/Eichkorn took the No. 2 match, 8-4, over Beermann/Blakely. The Hokies took the No. 3 match where Hamza/Abbey Walker (Sr., Lancaster, S.C.) defeated Mejia/Wasilewski, 8-4.

Tech returns to action on Sunday, at 10:30 a.m. hosting No. 25 Florida State at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus.
