BLACKSBURG, Va. --- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team will put its’ undefeated home record on the line this weekend against No. 5 Miami and No. 25 Florida State. The Hokies will play the Hurricanes Saturday at noon and face the Seminoles Sunday at 11 a.m.
Virginia Tech (10-6), ranked No. 54 in this week’s ITA national poll, dropped two road matches last week at No. 13 Clemson (2-5).
The top of the Tech lineup will once again have Inga Beermann (Sr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany) who is 8-6 in dual matches playing against the nation’s best. The Hokies success this season has been due to the play of freshman Martha Blakely (Reading, Pa.) and Courtney Rauscher (Evans, Ga.). Blakely is 10-5 in dual matches and 3-2 in the ACC playing primarily at the No. 3 position. Rauscher has proved to be a valuable asset at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions with a combined 8-4 worksheet. Jessica Brouwer (Sr., Maarssen, The Netherlands), Yasmin Hamza (So., Cairo, Egypt) and Holly Johnson (So., Tallahassee, Fla.) round out the probable weekend lineup.
Miami (16-3, 5-1) features four nationally ranked players including No. 6 Julie Cohen, Laura Vallverdu, No. 40 Bianca Eichkorn and No. 50 Michaela Kissell. The Hurricanes also have two ranked doubles teams including No. 24 Cohen/Vallverdu, No. 33 Kissell/Vallverdu and No. 37 Eichkorn/Kissell. The Hokies will be looking for their first win the series.
Florida State (8-6, 5-4) will be led by Federica Suess who is ranked No. 76 in the nation. The Seminoles blanked the Hokies, 7-0, in Blacksburg, Va. and hold an 8-1 advantage in the series.
The match against Miami on Saturday is also faculty & staff day. Those attending the match can register to win a VT polo, VT fleece and gift certificates to local restaurants. The first 100 fans will receive a free HokieBird BobbleHead Doll.
