CLEMSON, S.C. - Despite Virginia Tech taking the doubles point to open the match, Clemson proved too tough in singles in the Tigers 5-2 win Saturday afternoon. Tech falls to 10-5 overall and 1-3 in the ACC while No. 13 Clemson improved to 11-5 and 3-1 in the league.
Trailing 1-0, Clemson quickly took the lead as Alexandra Luc took the No. 6 match, 6-2, 6-1, over Holly Johnson (So., Tallahassee, Fla) and the nation’s top ranked player, Ani Mijacika, defeated Inga Beermann (Sr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany), 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1. The Tigers increased the lead as No. 10 Josipa Bek took the No. 2 match, 6-2, 6-4, against Jessica Brouwer (Sr., Maarssen, The Netherlands) and clinched the match with a 7-6, 6-2, win at No. 4 by Ina Hadziselimovic over Yasmin Hamza (So., Cairo, Egypt).
Clemson registered its final point at No. 5 as No. 102 Keri Wong won, 6-1, 7-6 (5), versus Courtney Rauscher (Fr., Evans, Ga.). Martha Blakely (Fr., Reading, Pa.) won Tech’s lone singles match with 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 3 over No. 95 Estefania Balda.
The match started on a good note as Tech took two of the three doubles contests to win the first point of the day.
Hamza/Walker won the No. 3 match, 8-3, over Balda/Luc and Tech won the point when Brouwer/Johnson upset the 8th-ranked duo of Mijackia/Wong, 8-5. Clemson’s Bek/Hadziselim, ranked No. 36, beat Beermann/Blakely, 8-6, in the No. 2 contest.
