BLACKSBURG, Va.- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis squad defeated Richmond by the score of 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus.

The Hokies, ranked 51st, in this week’s ITA national poll, move to 10-4 on the season, while the Spiders fall to 10-3 overall. After wrapping up the doubles point, Tech took four of six singles matches.

In singles action, Richmond lit up the scoreboard after winning the fourth match of play. Tech sophomore Yasmin Hamza (Cairo, Egypt) fell to Spiders’ freshman Helen Cunningham, 6-2, 6-2. Tech freshman Martha Blakely (Reading, Pa.) got the Hokies back on track, defeating Richmond sophomore Kelly Tidwell 7-5 and 6-2. Fellow freshman Courtney Rauscher (Evans, Ga.) tallied the third point for the Hokies, beating Spiders senior Ashlee Vosters 6-1 and 6-3. Richmond posted their second point of the match after winning the fifth match. Spiders freshman Joanna Matuszczyk took down Tech’s Holly Johnson (So., Tallahassee, Fla.) 7-5 and 6-4.

Inga Beermann (Sr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany) and Jessica Brouwer (Sr., Maarssen, The Netherlands) won their singles matches to lock up the win for the Hokies. Beermann beat Richmond senior Pamela Duran 6-3, 2-6 and 6-4, while Brouwer defeated Spiders junior Erin Clark, 6-4, 3-6 and 7-5.

Tech registered the first points of the match after sweeping the doubles contests. The Hokie team of Brouwer and Johnson, ranked No. 63 nationally, took down Duran and Clark of Richmond, 8-5. Tech won the third match, 8-6, after Walker and Hamza took down the Spiders Cunningham and Arana. The Hokie duo of Beermann and Blakely captured the second match in doubles play, defeating Vosters and Tidwell, 8-5.

The Hokies will be back in action on March 21. Tech will travel to play ACC foe Clemson. Start time is slated for 11 a.m.
