CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.. –Virginia won a very tight doubles competition then rolled through the singles to claim a 7-0 win over Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon. The contest was played on the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. Virginia, ranked No. 18 nationally, improved to 10-2 overall and 3-0 in the ACC while the 45th-ranked Hokies fell to 9-4 and 1-2 in league play.
Leading 1-0, Virginia took a quick 3-0 advantage as Amanda Rales defeated Yasmin Hamza (So., Cairo, Egypt), 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4 and Claire Barlett took the No. 5 match, 6-0, 6-1, over Holly Johnson (So., Tallahassee, Fla.). The Cavaliers clinched the team match at No. 1 when 83rd-ranked Emily Fraser took a 6-3, 6-4, win against Inga Beermann (Sr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany).
Virginia increased the lead with a 7-6 (5), 6-4, win at No. 2 by No. 72 Jennifer Stevens over Jessica Brouwer (Sr., Maarssen, The Netherlands) and Neela Vaez took the No. 6 match, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2, over Courtney Rauscher (Fr., Evans, Ga.). The Cavaliers won the final contest at No. 3 as Lindsey Hardenbergh defeated Martha Blakely (Fr., Reading, Pa.), 4-6, 7-6 (2), 1-0 (3).

Barlett/Maggie Yahner defeated Hamza/Abbey Walker (Sr., Lancaster, S.C.), 8-4, at No. 3 then the Cavs clinched the doubles point as Rales/Vaez, ranked No. 59 nationally, nipped Beermann/Blakely, 9-8 (3) in the No. 2 match. Virginia completed the sweep by claiming a close, 9-7, decision at No. 1 as Fraser/Stevens, ranked 51st-nationally, edged Tech’s 63rd-ranked duo of Brouwer/Johnson.
Tech returns to action on Wednesday, March 18, at 2 p.m. hosting Richmond at the Burrows-BurlesonTennisCenter on the Virginia Tech campus. Wednesday is Kid’s Day at the tennis center with an appearance by Hokiebird and the first 100 fans will receive a free VT Frisbee.
