BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team (7-3, 1-1) won their first match in conference play, 5-2, over ACC foe Maryland Sunday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va.The Hokies and Terrapins met at the Burrows-BurlesonTennisCenter on the Virginia Tech campus.
Tech, ranked No. 39 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, swept the doubles matches and tallied four wins in the singles contests.
Tech senior Inga Beermann (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) won the first match in singles action for the Hokies. Beerman took care of Eleanor Peters, 7-5, 6-1. Hokie sophomore Holly Johnson (Tallahassee, Fla.) won match number five, 6-4, 6-1, over Lisa Miller, giving the home team a 3-0 lead.
The Hokies locked up the match when senior Jessica Brouwer (Maarssen, The Netherlands) defeated Karin Lundmark, 7-6 (4), 6-2. Maryland got on the board after Maggie MacKeever beat Hokie freshman Courtney Rauscher (Evans, Ga.) 6-4, 7-5.
Hokie freshman Martha Blakely (Reading, Pa.) added the fifth point to the Tech side. Blakely won a close match over Michal Amir, 6-4, 7-6 (4). In the final match of the afternoon, Tech senior Abby Walker (Lancaster, S.C.), lost a close contest to Oskana Krutigenko, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
In doubles action, Beermann/Blakely got things started for Tech, winning the second match 8-3 over the Maryland team of Lundmark/Krutigenko. The Hokies captured the doubles point after Brouwer/Johnson took down the Maryland squad of Miller/MacKeever, 8-4. In the final doubles match Betts/Walker disposed of the Peters/Hansbrough team, 8-6, to sweep the doubles competition.
The Hokies will be back in action on Thursday, March 5 when they travel to Rock Hill, S.C. to take on Winthrop. The match time is slated for 2 p.m.
