VCU defeats Tech, 6-1
Hokies fall to 6-2

RICHMOND, Va. - Virginia Tech saw its’ three-match winning streak come to an end Saturday afternoon with a 6-1 loss at No. 38 Virginia Commonwealth. The match was played at the Thalhimer Tennis Center on the VCU campus. Tech fell to 6-2 on the year while the Rams improved to 7-4 on the year.

Tech, ranked No. 38 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, won two of the three matches to win the doubles point, but lost all of the six singles contests in the defeat.

In singles, Inga Beermann (Sr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany) lost her No. 1 match, 6-1, 6-3, against Ana Bara and Jessica Brouwer (Sr., Maarssen, The Netherlands) fell, 6-2, 7-6 (3), at No. 2 versus 115th-ranked Kateryna Yergina.

Elsewhere, Martha Blakely (Fr., Reading, Pa.) dropped a tight 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7), No. 3 match to Alex Bara, Yasmin Hamza (So., Cairo, Egypt) fell 7-5, 7-6 (5) at No. 4 against No. 125 Laura Burns, Courtney Rauscher (Fr., Evans, Ga.) lost her No. 5 match, 6-3, 6-4, to Olena Leonchuk and Abbey Walker (Sr., Lancaster, S.C.) dropped the No. 6 contest, 9-7, versus Mihaela Buena. A pro set was utilized once the team outcome had been determined.

The day began on a positive note as the Hokies captured the doubles point. Brouwer/Johnson made quick work of Bara/Bara, 8-2, at No. 1 followed Hamza/Walker clinching the doubles with a 8-4 win at No. 3 over Buena/Leonchuk. VCU won the No. 2 contest, 9-7, as Beermann/Blakely lost to Burns/Yergina.

The Hokies will return to action on Fri., Feb. 27, when they open ACC action at Boston College. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
