Tech concludes perfect day
Hokies blank Wildcats, 7-0

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech made it a Happy Valentine’s Day on Saturday evening completing a two-match sweep with a 7-0 victory over Davidson. The match was played at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. Tech defeated Liberty, 7-0, earlier in the day.

Tech (6-1), ranked No. 41 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, swept three matches to win the doubles point then won all of the six singles contests for the victory.

In singles, Holly Johnson (So., Tallahassee, Fla.) was the first player off the court with a 6-1, 6-2, win at No. 4 over Ali Gores followed by Yasmin Hamza’s (So., Cairo, Egypt), 6-2, 6-3, victory in the No. 3 contest against Alison Rauh. Jessica Brouwer (Sr., Maarssen, The Netherlands) did the honors by winning the clinching point in her No. 1 match, 7-5, 6-2, over Michelle Fanney.

In other singles results, Katie Blow (Fr., Richmond, Va.) won a tough 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (3), No. 5 match against Molly McDevitt, Martha Blakely (Fr., Reading, Pa.) battled her way to a 6-0, 7-6, victory at No. 2 versus Virginia Berry and Shannon Betts (Fr., Newnan, Ga.) completed the sweep with a tough 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (3) win against Samantha Galainea.

Tech swept the three doubles matches to capture the first point as Brouwer/Johnson made short work of Berry/Rauh, 8-1, at No. 1 followed by Inga Beermann (Sr., Bad Salfluzen, Germany)/Blakely clinching the point with their 8-3 win over Fanney/McDevitt in the No. 2 match. The Hokies completed the sweep at No. 3 as Courtney Rauscher (Fr., Evans, Ga.)/Abbey Walker (Sr., Lancaster, S.C.) defeated Galainea/Gores, 8-4.

The Hokies will return to action on Sat., Feb. 21, with an 11 a.m. match at No. 34 Virginia Commonwealth.
