COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis (4-1) team defeated 31st-ranked OhioState (3-3), 4-3, on Sunday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio. The Hokies and Buckeyes met at the Varsity Tennis Courts on the OhioState campus.
Virginia Tech, ranked No. 52 in this week’s ITA national poll, won two tight doubles matches to claim the doubles point then won the three out of the last four singles matches for the win.
Angela DiPastina of OhioState scored the first point for the Buckeyes, taking match No.5, 6-1, 6-1, over Tech sophomore Holly Johnson (Tallahassee, Fla.). OhioState won match No.1, to give the Buckeyes a 2-1 lead, when Kristen Flower defeated Tech senior Inga Beermann (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) who is ranked No. 125, 6-2 and 6-2.
Tech came back and wheeled off three straight wins. The Hokies tied the contest at two after sophomore Yasmin Hamza (Cairo, Egypt) registered a win over Julie Blackmore at No. 4, 6-1and 6-4. The Hokies captured the lead after the sixth match, when Courtney Rauscher (Fr., Evans, Ga.) took down Kelsey Haviland, 6-2, 6-2. Senior Jessica Brouwer (Maarssen, The Netherlands) won match No. 2, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 over Paloma Escobedo, to clinch the Hokies fourth win this season. OhioState’s Cami Hubbs defeated Tech freshman Martha Blakely (Reading, Pa.), 6-4, 3-6 and 6-2, in the final match of the evening.
In doubles action, Hamza/Walker lost a grueling 9-8 match at No.3 to DiPastina/Hubbs. Tech held off an OhioState comeback, when Brouwer/Johnson defeated Flower/Keesey in the match No. 1, 9-8. The team of Beermann/Blakely came back to claim the doubles point after beating Escobedo/Blackmore, 9-7.
The Hokies will be back in action on Sat., Feb. 14, for home matches against Davidson at noon and against Liberty at 4 p.m.
