BLACKSBURG, Va. --- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team travels to Columbus, Ohio this weekend for a match at No. 31 Ohio State. The Hokies and Buckeyes will meet Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Varsity Tennis Courts on the Ohio State campus.
Virginia Tech (3-1), ranked No. 52 in this week’s ITA national poll, opened the season with 7-0 victories on Jan. 28 over Elon and Longwood. The Hokies posted an impressive 7-0 win over No. 50 Iowa last weekend in the ITA Kick-off Weekend regional in Waco, Texas before falling, 5-2, to No. 4 Baylor in the second round.
Tech will be led by Inga Beermann (Sr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany), ranked No. 125 in the preseason national singles poll. The Hokies will also count on freshmen Martha Blakely (Reading, Pa.) and Courtney Rauscher (Evans, Ga.) to continue their solid early season performances.
Ohio State (3-2), ranked No. 31, opened the season with a home victory over Missouri (6-1) before dropping a 6-1 decision to No. 17 Notre Dame. The Buckeyes bounced back for wins over Eastern Kentucky (7-0) and No. 33 South Carolina (4-3). OSU has dropped its last two contests against No. 9 Duke (2-4) and at No. 20 Kentucky (3-4).
Following the Ohio State match, Tech returns home on Sat., Feb. 14, for matches against Davidson (Noon) and Liberty (4 p.m.)
