WACO, Texas - Virginia Tech dropped a 5-2 decision Sunday afternoon to fourth-ranked Baylor in the second round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Kick-off Weekend. The event was played at the Baylor University Tennis Center.

Virginia Tech (3-1), ranked No. 61 in this week’s ITA national poll, lost two tight doubles matches to drop the doubles point then lost four of the six singles contests.

After dropping the doubles points, Baylor (2-0) extended the lead to 3-0 as Nina Secerbegovic defeated Holly Johnson (So., Tallahassee, Fla.), 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 and Lenka Broosova picked up a 6-3, 6-2, victory against Tech’s Jessica Brouwer (Sr., Maarssen, The Netherlands) in the No. 2 match.

The Hokies registered their first point as Yasmin Hamza (So., Cairo, Egypt) took a 6-3, 6-3, win at No. 4 over Karolina Filipiak. The Bears clinched the match at No. 1 as 19th-ranked Taylor Ormond defeated No. 125 Inga Beermann (Sr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany), 6-2, 6-4. Martha Blakely (Fr., Reading, Pa.) dropped her No. 3 match versus 65th-ranked Jelena Stanivuk, 6-3, 7-5, and Courtney Rauscher (Fr., Evans, Ga.) won Tech’s other point in the final match with a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (8) win at No. 6 over Kasia Siwosz. A super-tiebreaker was utilized in lieu of a third set once the team match had been determined.

In doubles, Beermann/Blakely lost 8-6 at No. 2 to Ormond/Stanivuk and the Buckeyes clinched the point in the No. 1 match as the third-ranked duo of Borsanyi/Broosova edged Beermann/Blakely, 8-6.

The Hokies return to action on Feb. 8 when they travel to Columbus, Ohio to face No. 32 Ohio State.
