WACO, Texas - Virginia Tech had no trouble in the first round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Kick-off Weekend Saturday as the Hokies defeated No. 50 Iowa, 7-0. Tech will face the winner of the No. 62 Princeton versus No. 4 Baylor match in Sunday’s second round at 5 p.m. (eastern). The event is being played at the Baylor University Tennis Center.

Virginia Tech (3-0), ranked No. 61 in this week’s ITA national poll, won both of the completed doubles matches to take the first point then, captured all six of the singles contests to claim the victory.

Martha Blakely (Fr., Reading, Pa.) gave the Hokies a 2-0 lead by blanking Jessica Young, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 3 match. Yasmin Hamza (So., Cairo, Egypt) defeated Lynee Poggeensee-Wei, 6-2, 6-3. at No. 4, then Tech clinched the match as Jessica Brouwer (Sr., Marssen, The Netherlands) won, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 2 against Alexis Dorr.

In other singles results, Inga Beermann (Sr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany), ranked No. 125 nationally, had no trouble in her No. 1 match versus Sonja Molnar, 6-1, 6-3, and Courtney Rauscher (Fr., Evans, Ga.) picked up a 6-3, 6-3, win at No. 6 over Ally Majerckik. Holly Johnson (So., Tallahassee, Fla.) completed the sweep at No. 5 taking her match 6-4, 6-1, against Kelcie Klockenga.

In doubles, Hamza/Abbey Walker (Sr., Lancaster, S.C) took the No. 3 contest, 8-3, over Klockenga/Majercki before Beermann/Blakely clinched the doubles point with a 8-3 victory at No. 2 versus Poggensee-Wei/Young. Brouwer/Johnson were leading their No. 1 match, 6-3, against Dorr/Monlar when play was halted once the Hokies had clinched the doubles point.

The event features 60 teams playing in 15 regionals across the nation who will battle for the right to advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin.. The host team, Wisconsin, awaits the 15 winners, in the finals which will take place Feb. 13-16.
