Tech heads to Lone Star State for ITA Kick-off Weekend
Hokies face No. 50 Iowa in first round of national event

BLACKSBURG, Va. --- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team travels to the Waco, Texas this weekend to participate in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Kick-off Weekend. The Hokies will face Iowa at 11 a.m. (eastern) Saturday at the Baylor University Tennis Center.

Virginia Tech (2-0), ranked No. 61 in this week’s ITA national poll, opened the season with 7-0 victories on Jan. 28 over Elon and Longwood. Tech will be led by Inga Beermann (Sr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany), ranked No. 125 in the preseason.

Iowa (2-0), ranked No. 50, opened the season with 7-0 wins over Western Illinois and Northern Iowa. The Hawkeyes were 13-10 last season and tied for sixth in the Big Ten.

The other first round match will feature No. 62 Princeton taking on No. 4 Baylor at 2 p.m. The winners will advance to Sunday’s second round match at 5 p.m. with the loser’s participating in the consolation match at 2 p.m.

The event features 60 teams playing in 15 regionals across the nation who will battle for the right to advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin. The host team, Wisconsin, awaits the 15 winners, in the finals which will take place Feb. 13-16.
